Eastern Arizona College transfer student shares encouraging words for nontraditional students

Returning to school at the age of 46, nontraditional transfer student Shari Burnett encourages anyone who is interested in continuing their academic journey to find the courage and “go for it.”

First returning to school to complete her associate of arts degree in 2020 at Eastern Arizona College, Burnett continued pursuing her bachelor's degree at Eastern Arizona College through Arizona State University’s ASU at The Gila Valley’s off-site location.

Studying organizational leadership in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, Burnett relays her initial feelings of trepidation and fear, which turned into an absolutely positive and enjoyable experience.

“Let me tell you, I was scared to death to go back to school! In fact, I was terrified that I couldn't learn anymore and that I would fail. But it has turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life,” she said.

Read more to hear Burnett share some advice that made her transition to ASU easier, and offers advice as a recent graduate with her bachelor’s degree.

College spotlight: College of Health Solutions

ounded in 2012, the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University is the only health college of its kind — which is what you would expect from the most innovative university in the nation. Here, health is considered across disciplines, as tomorrow’s leaders in health address the challenges facing people and communities to stay healthy, improve their health and manage chronic disease.

Transfer students benefit from the flexibility of health degrees available on ASU’s four Phoenix area campuses and online. Students can move with ease from community colleges to the university with ASU’s MyPath2ASU transfer experience . The program enables students to finish many of the prerequisites required for their bachelor's degree as they pursue their associate degree, all while providing a smoother transition from community college to the university.

The College of Health Solutions offers transfer students:

  • A breadth of degree options across many aspects of health.
  • Early participation in research projects with community impact.
  • Practical learning opportunities through internships and capstone projects.
  • A friendly learning environment with supportive faculty and staff.

Our college helps students make an impact on people and communities now — no waiting necessary. Our Translational Teams allow students to get involved in research that addresses major health problems. The ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic serves patients with communication needs as it trains students who aim to become audiologists, speech-language pathologists and speech-language pathology assistants. Numerous health-focused student organizations and clubs allow students to discover the wide variety of health careers available to them, while giving them opportunities for meaningful volunteer work and fun with fellow students.
